According to the FDA, on August 8 North Fish USA Inc also issued a recall for their Cold Smoked Capelin product. According to the recall, the issue was “because the product was found to be over 5″ in length and uneviscerated, as such having potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum.”
The Cold Smoked Capelin was distributed to New York and Georgia with the intent to be further distributed throughout the East Coast. The FDA says botulism is “a potentially fatal form of food poisoning” that can potentially cause symptoms of weakness, constipation and dizziness.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is also investigating a fatal listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head deli meat. As of August 8, there have been 43 illnesses, 43 hospitalizations and three deaths linked to the recall.
